At first thought, you may imagine chimneys as an invention as old as the first wheel. However, the first chimney we know of dates back to the Middle Ages. In ancient times, smoke from fires built in huts would escape through the roof or holes in the ceiling. The Romans later developed structures within their walls to vent smoke out of their buildings. But the first known working chimney in a house was constructed in 1185 in Conisbrough Castle in England. This marks a significant turning point in the history of chimneys, as it was the first instance of a chimney designed to properly ventilate smoke while retaining heat.
Into the 17th century, heat was thought of as a fluid, and much science and discovery were needed to properly engineer chimneys. Louis Savot, a French architect, developed a fireplace that distributed heat in a room while venting smoke outwards through “passages under the hearth and behind the fire grate” and a “grill in the mantel.”1 Since then, chimneys have essentially remained largely unchanged in terms of engineering.
During the Industrial Revolution, industrial smokestacks were introduced, becoming a major source of noxious fumes and air pollution in cities. To address this, smokestacks were often made 50+ feet tall to disperse the pollution. While this reduced local pollution concentrations, it did not reduce total emissions. This brought about a need for new engineering solutions to tackle the larger environmental issues.
The photograph “Industrial Chimney Engineering: Manchester from Kersal Moor, 1852” illustrates the dramatic changes in the landscape during the Industrial Revolution. The thick plumes of smoke from industrial chimneys were a stark contrast to the pre-industrial era, where smoke was vented out of simpler structures. These early efforts in engineering were aimed at improving the efficiency of smoke dispersion and reducing the immediate impact of pollution on local communities.
Today, the problems of smoke and pollution extend beyond immediate local impacts. Societies are now facing the challenge of a larger scale and more complex environmental issues. For instance, the increasing carbon footprint of modern industrial and residential activities necessitates innovative solutions to reduce emissions and mitigate climate change.
One of the major challenges of the modern era is the need to capture carbon emissions before they enter the atmosphere. Recently, scientists have developed a method called "Electrochemical upgrade of CO2 from amine capture solution," published in Nature Energy. This technology has the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As an example, Suzhou RAINBOW Environmental Equipment Co., Ltd., established in 1993, has a long history of providing innovative solutions in the field of smoke emission systems and urban smoke treatment.
