Domestically, in the 1970s, a 40m FRP chimney for high pickling exhaust gas emissions at Angang Cold Rolling Plant and a 102m FRP chimney for Shenyang Smelting Plant were built. In 2006, the glass fiber reinforced plastic chimney for desulfurization of the thermal power plant of Changchun Chemical Jiangsu Co., Ltd. was designed and constructed and has been in good use so far. Since 2010, large-scale application has begun, and dozens of large-scale fiberglass chimneys have been built so far.

In the United States, the first fiberglass chimney was built in 1977. Even though it is more than 40 years old, it is still working resolutely. Currently, 85% of new desulfurization chimneys in the United States use fiberglass chimneys.


FRP chimney has obvious advantages

1. Outstanding corrosion resistance. FRP material is a polymer composite material that has certain resistance to most acids, alkalis, and salts. It can be used for a long time under alternating acid and alkali conditions. It can also withstand high temperatures and can well cope with washed and processed exhaust gas. .

2. Strong designability. There are many types of main raw materials for FRP, and the molding processes are also diverse. They can be designed according to different usage conditions, including the selection of raw materials, the accuracy of the manufacturing process and the determination of the installation method.

3. Easy to install. FRP materials have low density, light weight, and are easy to install. The construction period is nearly half that of traditional methods. FRP chimneys do not need internal anti-corrosion treatment, which avoids secondary construction and greatly reduces the difficulty of construction.

4. Product performance is excellent. FRP products have high specific strength and can meet various mechanical performance requirements required by chimneys. The external steel tower protection frame allows it to be used normally under various weather conditions. At the same time, the high-smooth inner surface of FRP products greatly reduces the resistance of flue gas movement, making FRP chimneys smaller in diameter than traditional chimneys.

5. Low cost and high efficiency. Fiberglass chimneys do not need anti-corrosion treatment during construction. They have better overall design, short construction period, long service life, and small chimney foundation. Their costs are lower than traditional chimneys, and their relative benefits are also higher.


The development prospects of fiberglass chimneys

FRP has been widely used in desulfurization chimney anti-corrosion in developed countries such as Europe and the United States, with good performance. It is strongly recommended by the US government and the American Electric Power Research Institute.

With the increasing domestic air quality requirements and the problems exposed by traditional flue anti-corrosion solutions, it is imperative that China learn from the mature experience abroad, make full use of the characteristics of FRP, and increase the application scale of FRP chimneys. The increasing maturity of FRP technology will also play a positive role in the development of clean energy in the power industry.
